Apa itu cause and effect?

     Dalam bahasa inggris kata cause memiliki arti sebab, sedangkan effect berarti akibat/efek. Jadi dapat kita tarik kesimpulan bahwa cause adalah mengapa sesuatu itu terjadi, dan effect adalah apa yang terjadi (setelah cause). Namun dalam penulisan, kata cause tidak selalu diawal kalimat, begitu pula dengan effect.  

Fungsi cause and effect

     Menjelaskan atau memberi informasi tentang terjadinya sesuatu.

(Momo pergi tidur karena mengantuk)

-        Momo failed in her test because she didn't study.

(Momo gagal dalam ujiannya karena ia tidak belajar)

• Because of

-         Because of you, I’m happy.

(Karena mu, aku bahagia)

-       We were bored because of the speech.

(Kami bosan karena pidato itu)

-       People can get sick because of germs. 

       (Orang bisa sakit karena kuman)

• As a result of

-        The flight was delayed as a result of fog.

(Penerbangan ditunda sebagai akibat dari kabut)

-         Her hair started falling out as a result of radiation treatment.

(Rambutnya mulai rontok sebagai akibat dari perawatan radiasi)

-        The flood came as a result of the heavy rains.

(Banjir datang sebagai akibat dari hujan lebat)

(Presiden menolak menyampaikan pidato itu sendiri, karena sakit tenggorokan)

-         A newly-married couple, he thought, on account of their walking so close together.

(Pasangan yang baru menikah, pikirnya, karena mereka berjalan begitu berdekatan)

• Due to

-         He was absence due to his illness.

(Ia tidak hadir karena penyakitnya)

-         Due to a lot of job, my father comes home late tonight.
(Karena tugas yang menumpuk, ayahku pulang terlambat malam ini)

-        The old man was lost his foot, due to car accident.
(Lelaki tua itu kehilangan kakinya, karena kecelakaan mobil)

-        Due to the lack of water, my flowers don’t grow well.
(Karena kekurangan air, bunga-bungaku tidak tumbuh dengan baik)

• Thanks to

-         Thanks to his hard work, he is now a very successful businessman.

(Berkat kerja kerasnya, ia sekarang menjadi wirausahawan yang sangat sukses)

-         She was able to go to college thanks to the scholarship.

(Ia bisa kuliah berkat beasiswa)

-        Thanks to the win, we soon reached the island.

(Berkat sang angin, kita akan segera sampai di pulau itu)

• As

-         She can't read the letter as she is illiterate.

(Ia tidak bisa membaca surat karena ia buta huruf)

(Ia melakukannya agar kamu menyadari kesalahanmu)

(Ia sangat kelaparan. Karena itulah, ia terlihat pucat)

(Ia mampu memainkan permainan ini berhari-hari tanpa melakukan apapun. Karena alasan inilah, aku menyebutnya ‘maniak’)

(Kakekku selalu memelukku dengan erat. Karena alasan inilah, aku selalu bersembunyi ketika ia datang ketempatku)

(Momo dibolehkan makan kue untuk pencuci mulut jadi dia senang)

(Ia terlalu banyak makan pagi ini, jadi ia tertidur siangnya)

(Ia lupa mengunci pintu, karena itulah si perampok dapat masuk dengan mudahnya)

(Mereka tidak pernah mengeluh tentang keputusan-keputusanku. Karena itulah, kita selalu berakhir sebagai team yang baik)

-        They play football all day. Therefore, they feel tired.
(Mereka bermain sepakbola sepanjang hari. Oleh karena itu, mereka merasa lelah)

-        My brother takes a study in New York. Therefore, he needs a passport.
(Adikku mengambil studi di New York. Oleh karena itu, ia membutuhkan paspor)

• Thus (sama dengan consequently)

-        Their company is not satisfied with your work, and thus you must prepare a new work proposal.

(Perusahaan mereka tidak puas dengan pekerjaan Anda, dan karena itu Anda harus menyiapkan proposal kerja baru)

-        They have revolutionized agricultural technology, thus allowing them to reduce production costs.

(Jika Momo membuang sampah, maka ia akan mendapatkan upahnya)

(Jika aku punya waktu luang, maka aku akan pergi berenang)

-         If you sleep late, then you are sleepy.
(Jika kamu tidur terlambat, maka kamu akan  mengantuk)
